Reviewing the Don’t Care Gaming Summer

Posted on August 22, 2023 by Aywren

Sometime last month, I declared this summer to be one of “Don’t Care.” What this meant was that I was going to stop stressing about my gaming backlog and try to just enjoy gaming as a hobby again.

I wanted to throw the numbers out the window and quit beating myself up for taking advantage of buying games I do want to play (one day) on sale. As Bhagpuss suggested in a comment on that post, I wanted to change my mindset from having a gaming backlog looming over me to one of having a gaming collection with much content to look forward to enjoying.

So, how is that going for me?

Has it worked?

Yes, but I still have a ways to go, I feel.

I stopped setting gaming goals, for one, though I have recorded what I actually achieved during this time without goals. While I didn’t write the goals down, the idea of making progress I mean… exploring my backlog is still in the front of my mind.

Here’s what I’ve achieved since last month!

Finished…

  • FFXIV: Koh's Gathering Jobs
  • FFXIV: PVP Season on 2 Characters
  • FFXIV: Ben's Gathering Quests
  • FFXIV: Zuri finished up to 6.4
  • Earned my Dream Horse in BDO - Trained it, too!
  • Placid Plastic Duck Simulator (Earned all of the new special birthday ducks!)

Played:

  • I Am Fish
  • Oregon Trail
  • Sun Haven
  • 7 Days to Die
  • Baldur's Gate 3
  • Airborne Kingdom
  • Palia

Beat Games:

  • Teacup
  • Beasts of Maravilla Island

Explored:

  • Playne
  • Inward

Other:

  • I've added a link/icon to my Switch Library - hosted on Deku Deals - in the right sidebar! (Trying to see it as a Library instead of a backlog.)

So, overall, even without goals, I’m making progress.

On the flip side, the fact that I even kept this list means I’m still thinking about progress and backlogs. However, I’m not making checklists to work towards progress, which is a positive change.

I even allowed myself to buy some cheap bundle games without guilt, as well as Balder’s Gate 3, which I’ve been playing quite a bit! To add to that, I’m allowing myself to play BG3 as much as I want without guilting myself for not playing other games in my backlog.

Over all, I think I’m feeling more positive about my gaming library, and will continue to push on with the “Don’t Care” summer even as summer moves on. It’s been an interesting experiment and a WIP in working on changing thought patterns.

I will continue to keep my achievement list as I go!
